“The name, Beau Bijou Design pays homage to our son, Beau, and we added “Bijou” meaning jewel. This reflects the exquisite nature of my kitchen designs. It brings me great joy to be able to assist customers in ways that were previously not possible during my time in kitchen showrooms.
Having worked in various roles within the kitchen industry, I noticed a prevalent trend among kitchen retailers, particularly national ones. Their focus lies more in achieving quick customer turnovers and maximising profit margins, rather than prioritising the creation of exceptional kitchen designs. This approach is understandable considering the substantial expenses associated with maintaining expensive showrooms. These can cost up to £20k per week in rent and rates, as well as managing extensive staffing levels and multi-million-pound advertising budgets.
Unfortunately, this often means that designers receive minimal training in design itself, with the majority of their education on sales. Notably, some of the largest suppliers offer only one or two days of design training.
Customers are increasingly realising that the “under one roof” model fails to meet their expectations and desires. Consequently, they source their own appliances, worktops, and kitchen installers.
Recognising these industry dynamics, I saw an opportunity to establish myself as a design expert in the kitchen market. Whilst many independent kitchen designers already exist, few possess interior design experience and intimate knowledge of the kitchen industry. I wanted to make sure I gave my customers the best possible service and outcome. This is the reason I use the best kitchen design software and only recommend the best suppliers. All, more costly to the business but far better for my valued clients.
